English for Native Speakers (Grades 6-9)
The English program for native speakers is a comprehensive course that teaches the essential elements of language skills: grammar, spelling, reading and listening comprehension, and oral and written communication. Supported with both classic and contemporary literature, students are challenged in vocabulary development, grammatical application, and written expression. Writing exercises incorporate formal, informal, and creative aspects into the curriculum. Communication skills are further refined through debates and speaking competitions. Students in all English classes are encouraged to compete and participate in regional, state, and national competitions.
English as a Second Language
The English as a Second Language program offers foreign students the opportunity to develop lasting skills in the use of the English language. This is a challenging program that instills the desire to communicate effectively. Basic skills are reinforced on each level through an emphasis on grammar, spelling, reading comprehension, listening comprehension, and oral and written communication skills. The result is a solid foundation in English grammar. Students also have the opportunity to advance in levels if they exhibit the potential and ability to succeed.
They have several weekly sessions through which they receive personalized instruction to increase their overall English proficiency. A required reading program affords students the chance to experience authors who use a variety of different styles, methods, and structures. Students in all English levels are encouraged to compete in spelling bees, and oral poetry and writing competitions. All students have the opportunity to present the TOEFL exam in the Spring. Students are given an English Proficiency Placement Test upon their arrival at Overbrook Academy and are subsequently placed in the level that will best ensure their success. There are three English levels: beginners, intermediate, and advanced.
Student’s conviction to speak English at all times
Overbrook Academy is first and foremost a language academy specializing in improving the English proficiency of its ESL (English as a Second Language) students to their maximum potential; therefore, it is absolutely necessary that the students be willing to speak English throughout the day with all of their educators and deans and among themselves.
Each student perfects her English skills to the degree to which she makes it a priority to speak only English. For this reason, Overbrook Academy offers its students constant incentives and positive motivation to those students who make a constant effort to improve their English reading, writing, and speaking skills. All students are expected to honor the commitment to speak only English that they undertake by attending Overbrook Academy.
Each week the students receive a grade for their effort to speak English throughout the day. Students who do not make an effort or are not helping their fellow students will be subject to disciplinary consequences like having detention, losing the privilege of internet use or the outing.
